SBRA Current Minutes

Shoreham Beach Residents' Association - Minutes of meeting

The following is a summary of the draft minutes for the July meeting of the SBRA committee.

APPROVAL OF JUNE 2024 MINUTES: Proposed by Joss Loader, seconded by Julia Watts. Agreed.

MATTERS ARISING: We have asked ADC to quote for a plaque on the bench at The Burrells beach entrance, commemorating the life of Honorary Alderman Liza McKinney. Joss raised the issue of also commemorating former councillor David Simmons, who was the vision and driving force behind the boardwalk.

The pathway, behind the sailing club, is still closed – Joss has flagged again to the EA and SPA.

BEACH NEWS & WEBSITE: BN is due back from the printers on Tuesday. Subs envelopes will be included with the summer issue. The website is up to date. We need to sort out new distribution arrangements from the end of 2024.

SOCIAL REPORT: Julia reported on the up-coming Sand Dance event later this year. Plans are well underway, and she's applied for a licence to collect donations, to cover costs. She has indicated that we will donate any surplus to the Shoreham and Adur Foodbank, of which Joss is a trustee.

FINANCIAL REPORT: Val circulated in advance.

SUB COMMITTEE REPORTS: Joss reported that Marine ward planning applications were uncontroversial currently.

COUNCILLORS' REPORTS:
Julia Watts:

FoSB: They have started to prepare for the exhibition at the Marlipins which runs from 1st August until 2nd November. The next public beach clean is on 12th October, starting at 12 noon at the Fort carpark. The strandline event is booked for 14th August at 11.30am.
Buckets and spade library: This is now running at the Ferry Road beach entrance.
Launch of the Sussex Bay project: Julia attended the launch of the Sussex Bay project at the Corn Exchange last month. Lovely to hear the positive initiatives from various environmental and other groups to protect and enhance the sea, our river and our beaches.
New byelaw from Sussex IFCA: Following an approach by Reg Philips of the Angling Trust, JuliaI put together a response to Sussex IFCA's proposed new byelaw which includes rules on fixed net fishing which seemed to be at odds with the use of the beach and sea for swimmers, anglers and non-motorised craft.

Joss Loader:
Anti-social behaviour: There are ongoing issues, largely on Friday evenings. Patrols in the area have been stepped up. Joss been in regular touch with the Police. An update was issued via social media urging people to report all incidents.
Noise complaints - Following residents' complaints, from both south and north of the river, Joss walked the riverwalk at 7.30am to check if planning conditions were being observed. Work is not meant to start until 8am at Free Wharf and on the former Frost's site. She is liaising with the council's enforcement team.
Beach Green – Joss attended a meeting with the new cabinet member for the Environment and Leisure, Cllr Jude Harvey, last week. They discussed proposals to improve the entrances to the cycle paths at the eastern and western ends. Cllr Harvey will report back.
Issues with parking bollards at the Fort car park - work in progress.

Another other business: Joss will chase up the lack of weeding on the coastal path, behind Quay Court and the Harbour Club.

Meeting closed at 8.25pm / NEXT MEETING – Thursday, September 5th.
